Moisture at 36 Degrees
Posted this on my multiply site a while back. Oil of Olay works for my mom. Unfortunately, my skin breaks out whenever I use the product.

Let me share with you a text message from my mom this morning: “It’s very hot here in Davao. Will just use Olay tonight. “
Just like many women who have seen Miriam Quiambao’s flawless face in the TV Ad, I became curious and I wanted to try the product which “fights the 7 signs of skin aging.” However, now is not the time for me to be experimental with skincare products since I’m seven months pregnant with my first child. So, I recently gave my mom a bottle of Olay Total Effects Lotion. I wanted to see if there really is an effect. My mother became, for lack of a better term, my guinea pig.
My mom is the simplest person in the world. She finds it tedious to put on make-up. Skincare, for her just means washing her face with soap and water and then getting rid of excess dirt with Ate Vi’s Eskinol. Unfortunately for her, she has a daughter who got involved in the cosmetics and skincare industry for a while.
These days, the temperature in Davao, same as Metro Manila, is somewhere between 34°C and 36°C. Those of you aren’t confined in an air-conditioned environment the entire day would be able to relate if I say that this year’s summer sun can definitely bake your skin in a few seconds. My mom is probably concerned that her face is going to feel warm if she puts on moisturizer on a very hot day. She might think that moisturizing on a hot day will make her skin feel oily.
Why do we need to moisturize our skin?
My friends who have oily skin tell me that they don’t put on moisturizer because they don’t need to. They say that the natural oil of their skin keeps their skin moisturized.
However, moisture is different from oil. Moisture is water. Water is not equivalent to oil.
When we cleanse our face, we strip off its natural moisture. Depending on the brand and its claim, moisturizers are either used to replace lost moisture or help the skin perform better by producing the required moisture.
Now, let’s go back to my “oily friends.” What moisturizers should they use? There are moisturizers in the market for different skin types. There are products specifically targeted for oily skin, dry skin or normal skin. If you don’t know your skin type, get a moisturizer that is “For All Skin Types” which adjusts to the needs of the skin. It’s as simple as that.
Without moisture…without water, our skin may be prone to dryness which could lead to wrinkles, fine lines, premature aging and eventually sagging. Without moisturizer, our skin may also be exposed to free radicals – environmental factors that could damage our skin.
Moisturizers protect our skin during day time and nourish our skin during night time. It keeps our skin plump and supple. Perhaps regular moisturizers won’t make us look younger than our age. However, we wouldn’t want to look older than we really are either, do we?
