Marie's Meatballs
There was one interesting episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, the one that's called Marie's Meatballs.
In the episode, Raymond's wife Debra was asking for a meatballs recipe from her mother-in-law Marie. Marie gave her recipe but intentionally replaced the label of one ingredient. So when Debra cooked the dish, it didn't taste as good as when Marie cooks it. Debra got so mad when she realized what Marie did. It became an issue between her and Raymond especially when he defended his mother. Raymond talked to his mom and Marie admitted what she did. When Raymond asked her why she did it, she asked him if he would still come over if Debra could cook well.
The episode made me realize that mothers are all the same. They want to feel needed by their children. Marie feared that Raymond won't need her anymore if she gives Debra her recipes. As early as now, I feel good when I know that my baby needs me more than anyone else in the room. I know, it sounds selfish. But I guess that's one of our 'maternal instincts'.
On the other hand, this 'maternal instinct' may be one of the reasons why some wives resent their mothers-in-law and vice versa. That's why I believe in the saying There can never be two queens in the castle. If you're living under one roof, one must be the queen and the other one must become a princess. If you're living in your in-laws' house, let your MIL be the queen. It's her castle. If you're MIL's nice, you can be the pampered princess :)
