Separation and The Five Stages of Grief
Someone told me that when your spouse leaves you, the feeling can be compared to when you've lost someone through death. Loss of a loved one is being experienced. You grieve. Therefore, the 5 Stages of Grief may also be applicable in separation.
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was the one who identified the 5 Stages of Grief:
1. Denial and Isolation - "This is not happening to me."
2. Anger - "Why me?"
3. Bargaining - "I'll do anything to make you stay."
4. Depression - "Life is not worth living anymore."
5. Acceptance - "It happened and I can't change things anymore. I have to move on."
It's just so sad to hear about married couples separating. It's extremely hard to see a marriage, of two people you love, fall apart. For the one who falls out of love and decides to leave the relationship, it's freedom. For the one who is left behind and who is still in love, it's tragedy.
