IPD Vaccine
Before being assigned in the U.S. for a few months last year, we were advised by friends of ours to check which vaccines were needed by my then 8-month old daughter.
Her pediatrician informed us that it would be wiser to give her IPD (Invasive Pneumococcal Disease)Vaccine.
According to the Australian website http://www.nationalasthma.org.au/ : IPD is the cause of several serious clinical infections that lead to substantial morbidity and mortality, including pneumonia, bacteremia without focus and meningitis. IPD is also the leading cause of meningitis in children aged 5 years of age and under. The risk of infection is greatest in immunocompromised individuals as well as immunocompetent people with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, chronic pulmonary disease and diabetes.
Our pediatrician said that since western countries have cooler weather, more cases of IPD are reported in those areas versus the tropical cities of South East Asia.
It is quite expensive to have our kids vaccinated for IPD in the Philippines. However, especially for those who can afford it, it is worth our peace of mind.
